Trying to save lives

Amy felt a lump in her throat as she watched live news coverage of the search and rescue operation for the plane piloted by John F. Kennedy, Jr. Parents and neighbors spoke somberly but excitedly about something so terrible happening to somebody famous, as if they were gossiping about a mutual acquaintance. Amy, however, felt sick to her stomach. There were real people in that plane, not just characters from a television show. She wondered if there was any way they could be saved or even if their bodies could be recovered. How could people be found in a vast ocean littered with wreckage? Was there any way for them to communicate their location in time? Amy thought she might just have the answer: her friend’s Ouija board.

Heading over to her friend Colleen’s house, Amy quickly explained her idea. Excited at the prospect of speaking with a celebrity, her friend immediately agreed. They got to work using the Ouija board together, begging the universe to somehow put them in contact with somebody who was on that plane. Immediately, they began to receive answers. Skipping the formalities of asking who was speaking through the board, Amy asked if there was anybody who was on that plane who was still alive, and the spirit talking through the board answered in the affirmative. She and Colleen exchanged excited glances, and Amy’s heart jumped in her chest. Time was of the essence. Colleen asked the most important question of all, trying to find out the location of the wreckage so that anyone living could be saved. The planchette moved quickly and purposefully, but didn’t seem to be spelling out actual words.

Their brows knit together in confusion. Frustrated, the girls repeated their question again and again. The planchette dutifully continued to spell out complete gibberish. Desperately, they tried to find their answers, but it was as if the consciousness that was coming through the board was being absorbed in the void of death or whatever was claiming those who had experienced the wreck. The girls were forced to abandon their attempt to save any survivors, and later they found out that, sadly, only bodies were found.

A spirit offering

Cielito considered herself to be a skeptic when she came to my Ouija board party, but she had experienced some mysterious things in life to which she didn’t ascribe any particular meaning. For example, she once lived with a Haitian woman who believed in spirits. Her landlady told her that people who needed healing tended to come to live in her home, and indeed Cielito had been going through some tough emotional times and was in need of a period of rest and recovery. She left the home when she felt better, and when the woman claimed that spirits told her that it was time for her to move on. She respected her landlady’s beliefs, and admired how she often gave the spirits food offerings. When Cielito came to my Ouija board party, she brought fresh fruit to share with the guests, an offering intended for the gathering’s living spirits.
